Athlii Gwaii: The Line at Lyell
Marianne Jones, Canada, documentary, 44 min., 2003
In 1985 on Lyell Island, a small, remote island in the Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands, BC), the Haida people stood in open defiance of the law for the first time in Canadian history, by forming a blockade to protest the logging of their land. Created by the Aboriginal production company Ravens and Eagles, Athlii Gwaii: The Line of Lyell takes the form of recollected memory, with interview subjects looking back to 1985 and remembering the struggle; we are there when the situation begins to heat up, when the tension mounts and then escalates. We witness the Tribal Elders taking a leadership role in the protest, transforming the very spirit of the standoff. The film is both a living historic document and an intensely emotional story about how the Aboriginal people created a peaceful Native resistance movement and successfully joined forces with environmentalists to stop the logging of Lyell Island. – R.S.
