The Tunguska Project
(Farsi with subtitles)
Gisèle Gordon, Canada, documentary, 82 min., 2005

An extraordinary creative, spiritual and cultural quest haunts the soul of this unforgettable docu-journey. Cree playwright and artist Floyd Favel travels from Saskatchewan to find meaning in an ancient explosion that rocked the Tunguska region of central Siberia. The 1908 explosion, equivalent to over a thousand atomic bombs, ravaged the land, incinerated animals and scarred a path of mystery and myth in the culture of the indigenous Evenki people. The cause of the explosion remains unknown. Favel, drawn to the mystery, chooses the explosion as the subject of his next play; His quest for meaning brings him to his ancestors, living and deceased, and the surviving Evenki elders and reindeer herders whose own ancestors have passed on sacred and profane knowledge that remains alive today – M.S.L

Gisèle Gordon’s works include Girls with Opinions, Blood River and A Nation is Coming. She is also on the programming committee for the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. Recently she curated a programme of Canadian films for the Salekhard Northern Nomadic Film Festival, Russia.
