A Canoe that Unites the People (He Waka Hono Tangata)
Robin Greenberg, New Zealand, documentary, 42 min., 2005
(English and Maori with subtitles)
Canadian Premiere
A retrospective glimpse into the making of a 60-foot traditional Maori waka taua (war canoe), a traditional skill almost doomed to be lost. Over a nine-month process we follow the communal effort from the cutting of the totara tree, to the carving of the waka by young carvers, to the launching of the waka in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. The tohunga whakairo (Master carver) and other tribal members share their experiences about the impact of the waka on their lives, reflecting on the journey and impact of recovering lost skills and the revitalization of Maori culture and traditions. – R.S.
