Aftermath: The Remnants of War
Daniel Sekulich, Canada, documentary, 73 min., 2001
Co-Presented by Random House Canada
Canadian Premiere
"War has a dirty secret-it never really ends." Long after peace treaties are signed, the world stops watching and arms merchants hustle away, the remnants of war remain. This is an unflinching, solemn and, at times, gruesome testimony to the unending consequences of war. In France, unexploded bombs from the First World War lie beneath the soil, still active and ready to kill. In Russia, shallow, mass graves from the Second World War are still being dug up. In Vietnam, the poison of chemical warfare still lingers in the soil, air and genes. And in Bosnia, de-miners risk their lives digging up bombs and mines strewn deep in the now quiet battle zones. The message is powerful and, one would hope, unforgettable: long after the peace platitudes have been sung, the survivors continue to battle war's grim legacy. -- M.S.L
