Alone Across Australia
Ian Darling & Jon Muir, Australia, documentary, 52 min., 2003
Jon Muir, one of the world’s most accomplished climbers and adventurers, attempts to traverse the continent of Australia from the south coast to the north coast (2,500 kilometres) alone on foot, his trusty dog Seraphim his only company. Jon carries nothing but the barest essentials and survives entirely off the land—hunting and gathering along the way. Self-shot, this doc is part video diary, part adventure, and part existential journey. Alone Across Australia reconnects the viewer to the realities of travelling great distances across land by foot. If modernity’s concerns with transportation and communication are ways of negating earthly space, then this documentary is a way of affirming or reconnecting us with the real space we live within and the geography that sustains us. An engaging, fascinating film that beats most Hollywood movies for sheer fun, suspense, tragedy and drama. – R.S.
