A Big Lake: Vies Nouvelle
Li Ping Weng & Olivier Meys, Belgium, documentary, 52 min., 2004
(Mandarin with subtitles)

This lyrical work follows the fragmenting world of a young man and his family – the Guo family - who live in Central China on the banks of the Danin River, a tributary of the Yang Tse. The river has become a lake and with it, a way of life is disappearing inch by inch under the shadows of a massive government project, the building of the Three Gorges Dam - the world’s largest dam. While the Guo home and community are gradually being flooded for eternity, we witness the subtle yet stark comparison between the old and the new. Masterfully shot and meditative in style the displacement is shown from an emotional perspective with a sense of reverie, rather than through detached social commentary. Rich in vivid imagery, this is an inspired work – startling, haunting, and compelling. – R.S
