Días de Cartón (Cardboard Days)
Veronica Clara Souto, Argentina, documentary, 51 min., 2003
(Spanish and subtitles)
Canadian Premiere
The Cartoneros of Buenos Aires are the casualties of globalization—they ghost the city’s streets at night to scavenge for cardboard to sell for a pittance. This army of shadows - more than 100,000 strong – are herded onto a battered, hollowed out train painted white that rattles through rich suburbs to take them to their foraging stations. Días de Cartón brings the viewer into the realities of a nation devastated by economic uncertainty and divided by the fear and loathing of poverty politics. Amidst the piles of trash and detritus the cartoneros have self-organized into a community that defines solidarity, commands dignity and asserts pride against the odds. – M.S.L
