Litigating Disaster
Ilan Ziv, USA, documentary, 58 min., 2004
(Hindi and English with subtitles)
Bhopal, India. The city is synonymous with disaster. On Dec. 3, 1984, vast amounts of toxic gas leaked from the Union Carbide pesticide factory. Hundreds of thousands died, and thousands were poisoned. This is a disaster that is still waiting for justice. No court of law anywhere in the world has held Union Carbide or its officers responsible. If the disaster had happened in a wealthier community, laws would have been changed and those responsible would have been held accountable. Litigating Disaster follows Indo-American lawyer, Rajan Sharma as he builds a powerful case against Union Carbide in the Federal District Court in New York on behalf of the victims in Bhopal. This is a riveting documentary about corporate malfeasance and the search for justice. – M.S.L
