Monumental: David Brower’s Fight for Wild America
Kelly Duane, USA, documentary, 77 min., 2004

From the moment pioneer conservationist and environmentalist David Brower first witnessed the extraordinary beauty of the Yosemite Valley, his life was tied to the fight to preserve the American wilds for future generations. President of the Sierra Club and founder of the organizations Friends of the Earth and Earth Island Institute, Dave Brower’s lifelong commitment to the environment is intimately conveyed through rare interviews and fascinating 16mm archival Sierra Club footage from the 1930s through to the 1970s. We explore the dramatic and lyrical story of Brower’s life, from his awareness of environmental preservation and his relationship with Ansel Adams, to his military service in World War II, and then his battles to conserve and protect the environment in a time when “conservation” and “environmentalism” had not yet entered the everyday consciousness. A thorough and engrossing story of vision, faith, and a way of effecting positive environmental change by working within the system. – R.S
