Proteus: A Nineteenth Century Vision
David Lebrun, USA, documentary, 59 min., 35mm, 2004
Canadian Premiere
Journey back into the life of biologist-artist Ernst Heckel – one of the most influential minds of the 19th century. A contemporary of Darwin’s, Heckel was torn between science and art, materialism and religion, rationality and passion. He found the key to integrating these conflicting dualities through a tiny one-celled undersea creature, the radiolarian. The creature’s beauty and seemingly infinite variety led Heckel to a sweeping vision of nature as a single, unfolding work of art. Through still images (photos, paintings and animation) the film masterfully weaves together a complex tapestry of biology, oceanography, history, poetry and myth. – R.S
