A Street for Sale
Iris Rubin, Israel, documentary, 60 min., 2004
(Hebrew with subtitles)
Canadian Premiere
When Ruth Speizer came to visit her old Tel-Aviv neighbourhood of Nachalat Binyamin, she looked for an opportunity to realize her own private vision: to transform the neighbourhood into an elite gentrification project. Her dream became the local artisans and inhabitants nightmare. With the encouragement of the city’s construction engineer, she purchased one historical building after another, evicting tenants and individuals whom she could have transformed into personal allies. It was then that a great protest erupted and the local inhabitants and artisans proceeded with a vision of their own. An urban morality tale for cities exploring gentrification, inclusion and citizen action…—C.T.P.
