Synopsis:

Johnny Tootall, a soldier who seems to carry the weight of war on his shoulders, finds himself discharged from the Bosnian War and on his way back to Canada with a dark and frightening secret. But before his boots can stand firmly on the Canadian soil he is dragged into yet another war — a war between his family and a local logging company.
Being the oldest male of the family Johnny must step-up and assume the leadership responsibility but lost love, a wolf and dark memories of abandonment plague him and distort his perception of the truth.

Johnny Tootall is the story of a spiritual quest for discovery and a rite of passage to reclaiming your own power. Set on the west coast of Vancouver Island, the story unfolds in Nu chah nulth territories, the land of mist and legends and here the wolf is sacred and becomes the guide in a young man’s rite of passage.

Written and directed by Shirley Cheechoo, the film explores rebirth and uses the continuous environmental slaughtering of the trees as the backdrop for Johnny’s journey. The roadblock in the film mirrors similar situations currently underway in native territories throughout British Columbia. In many ways, Johnny Tootall is an inspiring tale for those who support a greener world!

Co-presented with Planet in Focus International Environmental Film & Video Festival.
