Toronto, ON March 5, 2005 Planet in Focus, Canada's only international environmental film and video festival, presents the Canadian theatrical preview of Hubert Sauper's Darwin's Nightmare (Capri Releasing; Best Documentary, European Film Awards, winner of Official Selection of the Vienna Film Award, Official Selection TIFF), and three popular selections from the Planet in Focus 2004 festival: The Great Ball Game, Termites and Being Caribou. The films will be screened as part of Camera Bar's first annual Best of Festival Series on March 17. Darwin's Nightmare is a shocking look at how globalization has caused a country to condemn the majority of its starving population to slavery, prostitution and drug addition while every day over-fed Europeans dine off its vast stocks of Nile Perch. The Great Ball Game (animation) is director Andrew Horne's retelling of a Muskogee First Nation tale. Termites (animation) is director Nick Hilligoss' hilarious story of the battle between Eco the pest controller and his live-in population of party-happy termites. Leanne Allison & Diana Wilson's Being Caribou follows newlyweds Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison on their 1500 kilometer trek with the annual migration of the porcupine caribou herd. Since its debut in September, 2000, Planet in Focus has produced an annual festival that screens and promotes outstanding films and videos (all genres and styles) covering a broad range of environmental themes by Canadian and international filmmakers. Planet in Focus' mission is to promote the use of film and video as a catalyst for public awareness, discussion, and appropriate action on the environmental, ecological, and social health of the planet, including diverse perspectives. Planet in Focus also produces educational outreach programs such as Youth, Camera, Action, individual school programs, and Best-of-PiF national screenings. Planet in Focus: International Environmental Film & Video Festival 2005 takes place September 28 to October 2. Camera Bar was established to provide an alternative to the mega theatre culture. Its mandate is to support and encourage local talent as well as providing an eclectic mix of rare, hard-to-see and first run films to the West Queen West neighbourhood. True to its intentions, Camera Bar is thrilled to host the Best of Festival Series, the first of its kind in Toronto, and is proud of being able to give some of Toronto's wonderful film festivals the opportunity to exhibit the best of what their festival represent.
