Iranian works and in-depth portrayals featured at Planet In Focus

Toronto, ON September 12, 2005 —

Iran is the background and source of three evocative and exceptional films at the Planet In Focus: International Environmental Film & Video Festival. Each provide cinema goers with a rare glimpse into one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood countries in the world.

Bezad’s Last Journey , directed by Irish filmmaker John Murray, provides viewers with unprecedented access to Iran’s rugged and mountainous terrain. The film follows Bezad, a Qashqa’I nomad, on his spectacular annual journey across Iran. Seen through the eyes of this charismatic and humble mountain shepherd, Bezad’s Last Journey reveals a unique aspect of Iranian life seldom seen in the West. Resisting relentless pressures to give up their nomadic lifestyle including new expressways and farms traversing their traditional grazing grounds, the Qashqa’I have maintained their language, music, dance, dress, culture and one of the oldest and most authentic human migrations in existence today.

Making its world premiere at PIF, The Colour of Blood is Red, directed by veteran Iranian director Kioumars Derambakhsh, is a short gripping drama told from the point of view of the Maral Deer. Against the backdrop of a lush Iranian forest, this film is an emotional plea aimed at the viewer to reflect on the true horrors experienced by the hunted.

Noah’s Ark, a remarkable visual poem by female Iranian poet, painter and filmmaker Soudabeh Babagap focuses on loss, memory and recovery in the aftermath of the Iran Iraq war (1980-1988). Iranians who lost their ships in the missile attacks of the war still search for their “lost children”. Many of the iron hulks were sunk in the Persian Gulf while others anchor half-broken in the still waters. Babagap opens a window through which to examine the scars of war that still remain in this region.

These three films provide spellbinding views into the intricacies of Iranian life and cinematic art, and are must see films at this year’s Planet In Focus festival.

Bezad’s Last Journey and The Colour of Blood is Red screen on September 30, at Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave.Noah’s Ark screens on October 1 at the Royal Cinema at 3:30 pm. with the director in attendance.
