Detroit Collaborative Design Center

Canada/USA, documentary, 2006
62 mins. (DV)

The documentary challenges the myths about participatory community design, that it costs too much, that ordinary people cannot participate because they lack expert knowledge, and that participation compromises design quality. The film explores the processes of Detroit Collaborative Design Center, a non-profit architecture firm, the engagement arm of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture. They work with Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, a non-profit community organization in Detroit's inner city, helping them in the redesign of their 28,000 square foot facility. Mutual knowledge sharing along with building trust and respect, results in the revelation of indigenous knowledge that impacts the design outcome. The film explores the relationship between culture, design process and design decision-making.
