Currently Spain has a dozen of large geographical areas declared National Parks and therefore considered places of special protection. Donana, at the ends of the South of the Iberian Peninsula, on the edge of the Guadalquivir River was declared National Park in 1969. It is the most known Spanish protected area and one of the landmarks of the nature in the whole planet, a natural sanctuary of Europe, fundamental for the survival of numerous species.
