Feeding the Pigs chronicles the evolution of a family farm. It is an autobiographical rumination on ecological agriculture, the rural landscape, livestock, vegetarianism and food. The movie is equal parts documentary, video diary and experimental in form.
Comprised of photos, film and video spanning from five decades, Feeding the Pigs traces the story an immigrant family who struggle to make a living as farmers in Canada. The movie meanders through a first person account of rural/urban experiences, working in natural food stores and living with pigs.
Utilizing a sparse treatment of minimal commentary and sync-ed sound, the movie outlines a family's transition from conventional to organic farming. Triads of sequences are stringed together rhythmically in a composition that suggests the lyrical structure of a Pindaric ode. Particular consideration is given to capturing the vernacular ephemera of the farm.
