Eastern Europe, 19th century. In an isolated region at the frontier of reality and dream, two social outcasts living on the edge of a marsh believed to be inhabited by gnomes, monsters, and goblins are accused of a mysterious murder in the neighbouring village. A "witch" hunt ensues.
