Qumene (cum un uh) is both a tribute to a natural wonder (large sea snails that inhabit beaches of the Pacific Northwest coast) and a comment on hubris, on human arrogance. Using Sophocles' antigone as as filter through which to view taxonomy, Western exploration and exploitation of the earth andits peoples, Qumene is meant to remind us to slow down, bear witness, see and share the natural world we are connected to - to remind us that there are positive ways to leave a footprint in this earth.
