The Planet in Focus Foundation supports the charitable activities of Planet in Focus: International Environmental Film & Video Festival. The festival and its programs are the sole agent of the Foundation. The Foundation's charitable registration number is 83189 2955 RR0001.
Fergal Nolan is an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer Chair of the Planet in Focus Foundation. A graduate of the Universities of Alberta, Toronto and Oxford, he was a university professor and
administrator, then public servant and senior policy advisor to the Ontario government, before being nominated to the founding Board of the independent Radiation Safety Institute of Canada. He left
government when invited to become the first President and CEO of the Institute.
He has since led the independent Radiation Safety Institute from its original status as a local organization working to protect uranium miners from exposure to radiation in Northern Ontario to a national
organization for radiation safety in the workplace, the environment and in homes and schools. According to United Nations officials, the Radiation Safety Institute is a unique Canadian creation and the only independent, national Institute for radiation safety in any country. With its National Laboratories in Saskatoon and National Education and Training Centre in Toronto, the Institute has a professional staff of highly qualified scientists and educators. The Institute’s operating philosophy is summed up in the motto, “Good science in plain language”®.
Fergal Nolan, married, with three adult children, one dog, two cats and a new hat, lives in Toronto.
Wayne Dawson is a leader with over 30 years of business executive experience. He has been at the forefront of identifying and integrating societal trends such as sustainable development into business/industry plans & actions, through cause marketing and other creative strategies. Wayne’s experience includes Vice-President of the Cement Association of Canada responsible for Ontario issues, Director of Operations and Maintenance Manager for the Welland Ship Canal, and Project Manager of the Welland Canal Traffic Control Improvement Program.
Wayne has an Honours B.Sc. degree from Queen’s University in Mathematics and Physics. He had significant technical experience in discreet simulation modeling and operations research before entering into management in 1980. Wayne currently sits on the Board of Sustainable Buildings Canada and provides senior advice to the Revitalization Institute at Seneca College. He previously served on the Board of Directors for the Centre of Pavement and Transportation Technology at the University of Waterloo and participated in several committees providing leadership in the construction industry.
Hon. David Crombie was elected to Toronto's city council in 1970, and became Mayor of Toronto in 1972. Crombie was enormously popular as mayor, being re-elected in 1974 and 1976 with large majorities. He was described as the city's "tiny, perfect mayor". He left City Hall in 1978 to move to federal politics. Federally, he served with distinction for a decade, holding several important cabinet posts.
His concern for the natural and built environment is reflected in his roles as a commissioner with the Royal Commission on the Future of the Toronto Waterfront and as founding chair of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. He is the President of David Crombie and Associates, the Chair of Toronto Lands Corporation, and Chair of Ontario Place. He is the immediate past President and CEO of the Canadian Urban Institute and Chair of the Advisory Council of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization. In addition to his role as a former mayor of the City of Toronto and he was a Privy Councillor. Mr. Crombie was the first Chancellor of Ryerson University and is the recipient of honorary doctorates of law from the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo. Mr. Crombie is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
