Foundation Board Biographies

Dr. Fergal Nolan – Chair

Fergal Nolan is an enthusiastic supporter and volunteer Chair of the Planet in Focus Foundation. A graduate of the Universities of Alberta, Toronto and Oxford, he was a university professor and
administrator, then public servant and senior policy advisor to the Ontario government, before being nominated to the founding Board of the independent Radiation Safety Institute of Canada. He left
government when invited to become the first President and CEO of the Institute.

He has since led the independent Radiation Safety Institute from its original status as a local organization working to protect uranium miners from exposure to radiation in Northern Ontario to a national
organization for radiation safety in the workplace, the environment and in homes and schools. According to United Nations officials, the Radiation Safety Institute is a unique Canadian creation and the only independent, national Institute for radiation safety in any country. With its National Laboratories in Saskatoon and National Education and Training Centre in Toronto, the Institute has a professional staff of highly qualified scientists and educators. The Institute’s operating philosophy is summed up in the motto, “Good science in plain language”®.

Fergal Nolan, married, with three adult children, one dog, two cats and a new hat, lives in Toronto.
