Finalist for Green Innovation Award

The Environmental Impact Calculator created for Green Screen Toronto Initiative and led by Planet in Focus has been nominated as a finalist for a Green Innovation Award supporting new products and/or services that demonstrate significant potential for market success and create a positive environmental impact in Toronto. The Environmental Impact Calculator designed by environmental consultant Melissa Felder and her team member Carla Weinberg for Green Toronto Initiative was pitched to a panel of judges by Outgoing PIF Artistic Director-CEO Candida Paltiel, as it seeks to provide environmental stewardship and establish Toronto as a global leader and centre of excellence for sustainable productions in the screen based industry. Planet in Focus has spearheaded and overseen the Green Screen Toronto Initiative since its inception. The award will be announced at the Green Toronto Awards on Friday.

Green SceneZ Video Premiere

Also premiering at the Awards will be six videos produced by students at the Green SceneZ March Break video production program, administered by Live Green Toronto and Planet in Focus. Congratulations to the twenty-four students aged 11-15 from across the City who worked with our professional filmmakers to bring their ideas on sustainable living to life!

Water injustice highlighted in this month’s Mixed Greens Screening

Friday, April 30, 2010
6:45 PM
Gardiner Museum
111 Queens Park, Toronto, Ontario
Pay What You Can ($7 Suggested)

The long term effect of water contamination is making headlines again. A recent study shows that the health of the people of Grassy Narrows and the Whitedog First Nations in Dryden, Ontario continues to suffer, nearly 40 years after the pulp and paper industry stopped dumping 20,000 tons of mercury into the Wabigoon – English river system.

The Scars of Mercury, which premiered with Planet in Focus last year, highlights the continuing legacy of mercury poisoning and raises questioning as to whether Health Canada’s safety guideline for acceptable levels of mercury in fish consumption is reliable. Filmmaker Tadashi Ouri provides an update for Planet in Focus audiences on our new blog (www.planetinfocus.org/blog). Be sure to attend the screening and timely discussion afterwards.
